Jerome D. Poland, MD
 Physician
 Dr. Jerome Poland co-founder of the Crosby Eye Clinic specializes in LASIK vision correction, cataract surgery, surgery and treatment of glaucoma, and ocular trauma. In addition, Dr. Poland performs oculoplastic procedures of the eyelid.
Pioneer
Dr. Poland was a pioneer in the research of contact lenses and was a principle investigator in the development of extended wear soft lenses back in the late 70s and early 80s.
Dr. Poland became the medical director for Barnes Hind Hyrocurve for the training and use of this important new development. He traveled around the world and presented papers, gave lectures, and conducted courses on the fitting of extended wear contact lenses.
During this time, Dr. Poland was also an investigator for several of the newly formed companies developing intraocular lens implants, which today have become the standard of care for cataract surgery and have transformed the way cataract surgery is performed and for people's visual rehabilitation.
In the early 80s Dr. Poland traveled to the Soviet Union, where he spent time with Professor Fryedorov, the originator of refractive surgery, and he helped bring this technology back to the United States. He was one of the first people in the United States to perform Radial Keratotomy and performed over six thousand of these procedures.
Dr. Poland is also one of the first people to perform a new procedure know as Automated Lamellar Keratoplasty, which is the precursor to LASIK. He spent time with Dr. Steven Slade and Dr. Ralph Berkley in Houston, Texas in 1992 when this instrument was first brought in from Colombia.
Dr. Poland also owned the first approved laser in the state of Minnesota.
Experience
To date he has performed more than 30 thousand refractive surgical procedures, over 45 thousand cataract and other surgical procedures totaling over 75 thousand total surgical procedures. In addition to being an active ophthalmologist in private practice, Dr. Poland has served as a consultant to industry and for medical journals worldwide and is still active in conducting courses at international meetings.
Inventor/Educator
In 1981, Dr. Poland invented a visco-elastic known as OcuCoat, which is still used worldwide to facilitate cataract surgery. With a strong commitment to education, Dr. Poland currently serves as a clinical professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School and regularly teaches at that institution as well as having medical students perform clinical rotation through the Crosby Eye Clinic.
Technology
The Crosby Eye Clinic has a state-of-the-art Nidek laser with a wavefront analyzer. It is a fixed-site laser with a dedicated sterile operating room that is used only for laser procedures. Dr. Poland is also certified to teach other doctors in the LASIK procedures, and we have doctors rotate through the Crosby Eye Clinic on a regular basis to learn the use of the micro-keratome and to observe and learn our LASIK procedures.
EducationDr. Poland received his medical degree in 1966 from the University of Minnesota. He interned at Stanford University in California, and completed his residency in aerospace medicine at the U.S. Naval Aerospace Institute in Pensacola, Florida, where he also learned how to fly military aircraft and made carrier landings. He completed his residency at the University of Minnesota in 1974, and has been in private practice since that time. He is currently a member of The American Medical Association, The American Academy of Ophthalmology, The Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology, The European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and The International Society of Refractive Surgery.
Community
In addition to his medical work, Dr. Poland contributes his time to community organizations. He currently is co-chair for the annual fundraiser for Kinship Partners, and is on the foundation board of the Central Lakes Community College. Dr. Poland has endowed a teaching research chair in the ophthalmology department of the University of Minnesota Medical School. Along with the Spanish Instructor at the Central Lakes College, Dr. Poland has established a Latin studies scholarship at the college.
