Advanced Surgical Procedures - Crosby Eye Clinic

Dr. Jerome Poland is a pioneer in many of the most common surgical eye procedures done today. He is one of the most experienced surgeons in LASIK and other technologically advanced procedures. Look to the Crosby Eye Clinic to alway lead the way, bringing you the very latest in modern medicine delivered in a hometown atmosphere.

Here is a list of some of the more common procedures performed both at the Crosby Eye Clinic and at the Cuyuna Regional Medical Center within the Minnesota Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIMIS).

Glaucoma filtering procedures are performed to relieve the pressure in the eye when conventional drops and laser techniques have failed. In 1973, Dr. Poland was the first doctor to perform this technique in the State of Minnesota during his residency at the VA Medical Center of Minneapolis. The surgery takes approximately one half hour and eliminates the need for drops in approximately 70% of all cases.

Blepharoplasty
Eyelids, skin and tissues around the eye tend to sag as we age. This excess skin is surgically removed in an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia at MIMIS.

Ptosis Repair
Ptosis repair is a repair of dropping eyelids when there is sagging of the muscle itself and not of the surrounding soft tissues. This procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure and takes approximately one half hour.

Entropion Repair
As people age, some experience eyelids that turn in; resulting in lashes rubbing on the eye. This is relieved with a 15 minute outpatient surgical procedure at MIMIS. There are several different types of repairs that are used and all have a greater than 98% success rate.

Ectropion Repair
Due to aging of the eye, some people experience lower eyelids that turn out leaving the eye exposed due to evaporation of tears. This sets up a cycle of infection and irritation. With the ectropion repair outpatient surgical technique, the eyelid is shortened and turned back in so the eye is once again protected.

Extraocular Muscle Surgery
Crossed eyes or eyes that deviate upward or outward can be surgically corrected. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia utilizing the latest techniques. The success rate is greater than 80%.

Secondary Lens Implantation
Patients who have had older style cataract surgery will need implantation of an intraocular lens. Crosby Eye Clinic surgeons at MIMIS, using minimally invasive techniques, can implant an intraocular lens. In many cases, this can eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses for distance. This restores the peripheral vision and greatly enhances the quality of the patient's vision.

Corneal Transplants
Corneal transplants entail using donor tissue to replace the diseased central visual portion of the cornea, restoring the useful functioning vision. Dr. Sjoberg is specially trained in this unique procedure and welcomes your questions regarding this remarkable procedure. Call the CEC for more information on email an inquiry from our contact page.

Eye TraumaLakes area recreation opportunities keep people active year round. If an eye injury occurs, it is satisfying to know that surgeons are able to repair most traumatic events that occur to eyelids and eyes. Dr. Poland has taught the eye trauma course to residents and students at the University of Minnesota for the past 30 years.

Other procedures
Please ask your doctor about any other corrective optical procedures of interest. In most cases physicians at the Crosby Eye Clinic can treat your problem. If needed tertiary level care is available through our affiliation with the Minnesota Eye Consultants at the world renowned Philip's Eye Institute.
